I don't think it was the basketball lol.

Best of luck to you. Israel's gain, America's loss. So many stories reminding me historically speaking, of Vienna 1910, Berlin 1933, Paris 1940. Assimilation? word association with treachery, false friends. The college-age children of our friends & neighbors, shouting "go back to Poland" at college-age children they grew up with.

I lived in Jaffa in the summer of 1988, a time of great hope. Wrote a novel set there in that year that now seems so outdated. I will be thinking of you, so hope you keep in touch by posting here.

Welcome, but be warned that my (old lady) mom’s main reason to move from our falling apart 1970s apartment to a modern 2022 vintage one wasn’t shitty after-market air conditioning and crumbling concrete around it, nor the shitty potholed single-space, ultra narrow parking - it was the neighbors kids running back and forth on her ceiling for hours on end. I feel far more comfortable visiting the new apartment (don’t have to fix anything there), but yeah… that can happen in the Holy Land too.

Good luck with the move. The story was awesome.

We will be awaiting your return!! I arrived from NY ten months ago and have been writing to my bones since. It’s paradise interspersed with missiles and car rammings. It is absolutely worth it!! Let me know how we can support your arrival.

Lived in Park Slope. Now live in the woke, pro-Hamas neighborhood of Mile End, in Montreal. I admire your choice.

My grandfather’s uncle Jack Schenk owned it, then it went to my cousin Harold Schenk. I thought it went bankrupt and then they opened a kosher hotel in Miami Beach, but maybe they sold it to your family first?

My branch owned Schank’s Paramount in Lakewood,NJ, which eventually went bankrupt.

Are we talking about Schenk’s in the Catskills ? My father was a principal on a small business corporation that took over the mortgage on Schenks after Schenkd defaulted on a loan That hotel functioned until the early 1970s when there was a fire snd then the premises are sold to a Chasidic group who turned it into a summer camp

Yes - that was Harold Schenk, my cousin. Now it’s Camp Shalva. A local historian helped rescue the sculpture that stood out front.
