Wow. A business owner in my county has come out as a rabid antisemite, and SHE also said “Jews call everything antisemitic” to water down the justified response to her blatant discriminatory remarks. When college students (including at my alma mater, NYU) demonstrated and harassed Jews, I thought, “This will blow over.” It’s not blowing over. It’s cascading and permeating many areas of life. Very worrisome.

History tells us that antisemitism doesn’t generally blow over.

I'm so sorry this is happening. It's absolutely sickening.

My grandfather had a person tell him (when firing him from his job, which was the only place he could find willing to hire Jews at the time) that he was Jewish and thus would have no trouble finding another job. This was the 60s in the Soviet Union. It's absolutely horrifying that this is where we are in the US right now.

My pre-10/7 experience was planning a professional conference to take place in Tel Aviv. We’re immigration lawyers - multicultural is our thing - I honestly thought people would be excited. As we were planning, I was surprised to learn that a (ersatz) friend was doing everything possible to stop it. Really? Her? But we’re friends. Apparently not or no longer, take your pick. We were trying everything to mollify her, the conference was to take place in Tel Aviv AND Amman; we were going to visit three consulates (a big deal for immigration lawyers); we were having someone come to speak about Palestinian rights in Israel, and so on. She claimed DEI, it wasn’t inclusive enough. There was uproar - even a Jewish colleague who wanted to get ahead in the bar association was against us. The bar association cancelled the conference (and the Jewish colleague who wanted to get ahead, did not). Fortunately, there were people who still wanted to go, so we self-funded the conference. It wasn’t as big as it would have been, but it was one of the best conferences of our association’s history (if I do say so myself).

I agree that finding voices with similar experiences has been tremendously helpful. Our bar association is so bad, that many of us have started a “side” bar (accidental pun but maybe apt.). Shtetl indeed.

It’s so awful, and the complicit Jews playing along make everything worse. It seems for every academic / multicultural / nonprofit / medical organization there now exists a parallel Jewish one. On the plus side, here we are, together again, for better or worse.

Thank you for sharing you story

I hope institutions and individuals will soon come to realize their emboldened antisemitism has no place in the United States
